Following are the workshops (2007-09) for which Dr. Thomas Mathew was Organizing Secretary

  1. National Workshop on Emerging Fevers with focus on Chikungunya : A national level workshop was held on 28-12-2007 at Hotel Abad Plaza , Eranakulam. An action plan for prevention and control of chikungunya/dengue was prepared and a standard protocol for management of chikungunya was documented, published and distributed all over the state.
  2. Strengthening of disease surveillance system in Medical Colleges: A State level workshop was held at the NRHM Directorate on January 24th, 2008 with the involvement of all medical colleges in the State. Steps were taken for the improvement of reporting systems from medical colleges and regional PEID cells and the Microbiology departments.
  3. Workshop on monitoring and Supervision of strategies for prevention and Control of Chikungunya/Dengue in Kerala was conducted on 26th March, 2008 at TB Association Hall,TVM with the involvement of all the stakeholders. The workshop aimed at developing a uniform system of monitoring and supervision of field level activities implemented in the State especially against Chikungunya and Dengue.
  4. Inter-district meeting at Kasaragode: workshop to develop an interstate action planwas conducted at Kasargode on 19th June 2008 to formulate a joint action plan involving Kasargode, Kannur districts of Kerala and also the bordering districts of Kudaku, Dakshin Kannada and Mangalore districts of Karnataka state for controlling the current outbreak of CG fever in the area. Mr. Madan Gopal IAS, Principal Secretary, Health, Govt. of Karnataka, Dr. Dinesh Arora IAS, SMD, NRHM, and DHS, Kerala participated .
  5. Ten by five (10/5) Block Level Initiative: Launched in September 2008, for the control of communicable diseases in the State; the block level action plan for the control of communicable diseases in the State has been prepared after much deliberation following the Ambalappuzha- Chettikadu joint workshop on July 10th 2008. The action plan has been printed as a book and steps have been initiated to distribute it to the field level health care workers.
  6. IDRV KERALA 2008 – workshop to develop guidelines for implementation of intra dermal vaccination against rabies in Kerala was held on 20th and 21st September 2008 at Hotel Taj Residency, Thiruvananthapuram and was attended by 9 faculties from all over India and more than 300 participants from different parts of the state.

  11. Combating Childhood Micronutrient Malnutrition in Kerala with special focus on Vitamin-A– A state level workshop to develop Strategies for Combating Childhood Micronutrient Malnutrition in Kerala with special focus on Vitamin-A was conducted on 11th and 12th June 2009 at Taj Residency, Thiruvanathapuram supported by UNICEF. Dr.Satish Kumar, Chief, UNICEF Field Officer for Tamil Nadu and Kerala presented the background, plan and goal of the workshop. Inauguration was by Dr.Viswas Mehta IAS, Secretary (H & FW) and the key note address was made by Dr.Dinesh Arora IAS. Smt. P.K.Sreemathi Teacher, Honourable Minister for Health & Social welfare inaugurated the State Chapter of IPHA and MDA-2008HC & CS report was also released during the valedictory session. An Action plan for combating Vitamin A deficiency was prepared.
  12. APCRI CON 2009- The 11th National Conference of Association for Prevention and Control of Rabies in India (APCRI) was conducted on 4th and 5th July 2009 and inaugurated by Hon.Health Minister at Taj Residency, Trivandrum. ‘IDRV: The challenges ahead’ was the theme in the conference.
  13. Regional seminar & Workshop on Combating Childhood Micronutrient Malnutrition in Kerala with special focus on Vitamin-A was conducted on 7th August 2009 at Hotel Joys palace, Thrishur to formulate specific district level action plan with help of district stakeholders.
  14. SPACE 2009- Dept. of Health and Social Welfare entrusted SDCMC the responsibility of organising and conducting a workshop on ‘Suicide Prevention among Adolescents and Children – SPACE’ supported by UNICEF. Honourable Chief Minister Shri. V S Achuthananthan inaugurated the two day workshop in the presence of honourable Health Minister, Smt. P K Sreemathi Teacher. Delegates from dept. of health and social welfare, NIMHANS, Community Medicine units, NGOs working with children and adolescents etc. participated in the programme. A comprehensive strategic plan for the prevention of adolescent suicides have been prepared as part of the workshop.
  15. PAL KERALA 2009- A workshop was conducted to develop guidelines for pilot project on Practical Approach to Lung-Health in Kerala, inaugurated by Health Minister on 21st &22nd October 2009 at Hotel S PGrand Days, Thiruvananthapuram, supported by WHO & NRHM.
